New Blog (Worth Highlighting) About GSK’s Zofran Causing Birth Defects

Zofran was thought to be safe for pregnant mothers to take to help combat severe morning sickness, vomiting and nausea. Unfortunately Zofran is not meant for controlling nausea and vomiting in pregnant women, rather its main function is to treat people with cancer as chemotherapy, surgery and radiation usually causes nausea. Up until recently, studies indicated there were no unusual incidences of miscarriage, birth defects or stillbirth and no occurrences of low weight in newborns or preterm labor for mothers who had used Zofran drug. This is fatally wrong. Mothers throughout the United States filed Zofran birth injury lawsuits against the manufacturer of the drug, Glaxo Smith Kline.

Zofran recently pled guilty to federal criminal health care fraud charges for violations of the Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act. GSK agreed to pay $1 billion in criminal penalties as well as $2 billion in civil penalties to resolve a  the charge that GSK wrongfully promoted Zofran for off-label use in expectant mothers, and paid kickbacks to doctors to prescribe Zofran for this use.
