GlaxoSmithKline and its disturbing Mistreatment of Children and Infants…

Since blogging about GSK’s exposure on RTE Primetime yesterday, my blog has had a spectacular surge in views…

RTE Primetime is Ireland’s premier investigative journalism show, and last nights expose of GSK’s involvement in the unethical testing of vaccines on Irish babies in care homes and the subsequent cover up surrounding it, was profoundly disturbing. GSK seems to have a very dark history when it comes to children. It seems to view the most vulnerable of human lives with absolute inhuman disregard. For more on how GSK treats children read the following….

GSK linked to trials forcing Aids drugs on deprived US children

GlaxoSmithKline will be accused this week of backing drug trials in the US in which underprivileged children were forced to test Aids treatments against their will.

The trials have been taking place in New York under the auspices of the Administration for Children’s Services, the body that looks after the welfare of children in New York City.

The ACS has an agreement with the Pediatric Aids Clinical Trials Group, supported by GSK and other drug companies, to test treatments on HIV-positive children. No tests can take place on children without parental consent and drug companies have had great difficulty in the past obtaining such consent for Aids drug trials.

However, the ACS is deemed to be the legal guardian for many HIV-positive children. According to a BBC2 documentary, Guinea Pig Kids, to be shown on Tuesday, the ACS has forced children to be involved in these trials, removing them from foster homes if the foster parent did not comply and even physically making the children take the drugs.

The programme interviewed the family of Garfield Momodu, an HIV-positive child who was removed from his grandmother and taken into care when she stopped giving him the drugs prescribed in the trials. Researchers also interviewed an unnamed child who said he and others were physically forced to take drugs through a peg-tube inserted into their stomachs.

Secret emails reveal that the UK’s biggest drug company distorted trial results of an anti-depressant, covering up a link with suicide in teenagers.
Panorama reveals that GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) attempted to show that Seroxat worked for depressed children despite failed clinical trials.

We need a jab inquiry

Friday September 23 2011

The link between the Pandemrix swine flu vaccination and narcolepsy in at least 16 children has to be scrutinised.

Manufacturers GlaxoSmithKline were indemnified by the State from any liability for side effects as the vaccine was rushed through. We need a full explanation from the Irish Medicines Board about how this vaccine was researched and tested.

Mother says she’s totally convinced swine flu jab caused son’s narcolepsy

THE MOTHER OF a seven-year-old boy who developed narcolepsy in the months after receiving the swine flu vaccine says she’s 100 per cent convinced that the jab caused his condition.
Mairead Lawless is a member of SOUND (Sufferers of Unique Narcolepsy Disorder) which is a group made up of parents and friends of children who have recently been diagnosed with narcolepsy in Ireland.

In July the European Medicines Agency said that there was a link between the sleeping disorder and the administration of the Pandemrix vaccine to children and young adults. It recommended that Pandemrix should not be given to people unless other influenza vaccines are unavailable and they are at a high risk of infection.

Earlier this month the National Narcolepsy Task Force in Finland said it could confirm that the Pandemrix vaccine had contributed to the increased incidence of narcolepsy among four to 19 year olds in Finland. The study also found that the narcolepsy associated with the vaccine was identified in persons who carry a specific genetic risk factor.
The Irish Medicines Board has confirmed to that it’s received 16 reports with clinical information which confirms a diagnosis in individuals who were vaccinated with

Mairead Lawless’ seven-year-old son Alex received the vaccine in January 2010. She decided to vaccinate he and his older sister as there was a small baby in the house.
By Easter 2010 he was sleeping for longer and longer periods during the day, up to three hours at a time. Lawless said that after a “long and tortuous” journey he was finally diagnosed with narcolepsy.
She made the link between the condition and the vaccine when she read about another case in the newspaper. She told that she is “totally convinced” that her son’s narcolepsy was caused by Pandemrix.
SOUND met with the HSE in July. The group said that specific commitments were given during the meeting but progress since then as been described as ‘minimal’.
The HSE has told that it is in contact with the families of reported cases of narcolepsy and is seeking to put the appropriate services in place, as required.
In a statement the HSE also echoed the findings in Sweden and Finland, and confirmed that since August 2010, a small number of cases of narcolelpsy have been reported in Ireland.
The HSE has also said that it has not yet been determined if the vaccine could have contributed to the development of the condition. It said that work is ongoing to find out “if there is a true association between the vaccine and the disease” with the results expected later this year.

It confirmed that it’s conducting its own study of all cases of narcolepsy in Ireland over the relevant time period. Nine hundred thousand doses of Pandemrix were administered at HSE clinics and by GPs in 2009 and 2010.
The Irish Medicines Board meanwhile has said that while 16 cases have been identified, there are others being investigated. Mairead Lawless has said that SOUND are aware of at least 20 children who have developed narcolepsy.
Lawless acknowledges that those who have developed the condition may be genetically pre-disposed to it, but said that it is her understanding that the vaccine accelerated the likelihood of narcolepsy presenting itself.

Lawless said that the Finnish government have moved very quickly to agree to provide compensation for those affected, but that even applications for medical cards from the HSE on behalf of Irish children have been unsatisfactory, with one child being granted a card so far.
Reuters has reported that a compensation process is underway in Finland, while a spokesperson for GlaxoSmithKline – which manufactures Pandemrix – has said that the company is committed to ongoing research into narcolepsy.

Lawless said that some kind of monetary compensation is a concern, explaining that “it’s not just the medicines and monitoring costs, their childhood has been totally changed. We don’t know what to expect out of the future”.

She said that her son doesn’t play after school, and she worries that he may never be able to drive or hold down a job. The children who have been diagnosed with narcolepsy have returned to school this September with nothing in place for them, as the condition is not recognised as a disability.

Lawless said “if the HSE are saying that yes, they’re working away, then they’re silently working away, because we’re certainly not aware of it”.

at least a dozen babies have died in a pneumonia vaccine trial conducted by GlaxoSmithKline in Argentina. The Argentina Federation of Health Professionals (Fesprosa) asserts that children of poor families are being used for the trials, and parents are bullied into signing consent forms. The trials are still continuing, even though at least 12 infants have already died.

Fesprosa maintains that there is no state control and that there are no ethical requirements. This doesn’t come as any surprise to those who know how these kinds of human trials usually occur. Generally speaking, vaccine trials are conducted in Third World countries on poor people who often feel trapped into participating in human health experiments in order to receive medical care or other necessities.

One doesn’t find these kinds of experiments going on in places like the United States or Europe, where names and faces of victims would surely get out into the media and cause a big stir. Instead, the infants of impoverished people, who often can’t even read or write, are used in the trials. Apparently, the lead investigator of the trial didn’t think it was any big concern that over 12 babies have already died since deaths from respiratory illnesses caused by the pneumococcal bacteria kill even more people. Of course, this is no comfort to the poor mothers whose babies are sacrificed for the monetary gains of a pharmaceutical giant.

The great aunt of one of the victims alleges that once children begin to participate in these trials, there is no way out. Mothers who try to remove their children from the trials are browbeaten into submission, being told that their children will never receive any other vaccines if removed before a trial is completed. Imagine being a poor, uneducated mother and having to make such a choice. (Remember, too, that some can’t even read the consent forms they are signing!)
