In Norfolk, Jenny*, 25, is also reliant on an internet company for her supply of the antidepressant Seroxat, which she was prescribed by her doctor four years ago after a family bereavement.

At first, the tablets were vital to her recovery, but they became something more. “When I tried to come off them on the advice of my GP I couldn’t,” she says. “When my prescription ran out, I went online and could easily get my own.”
Although Jenny never takes more than the recommended 40mg daily dose, she worries she’ll never be able to wean herself off. “It’s hard,” she says. “I get terrible withdrawal symptoms.
But Jenny is at risk of damaging her health – not helping it. Both Vicodin and Seroxat have worrying side effects.
“Used excessively long-term they could lead to kidney and liver damage,” says GP Ellie Cannon.
